Perhaps the shift to more family values this year in Tinseltown stems from last year’s over the top naughtiness.
Young Miley Cyrus just 15 has had to defend herself from rumours that she’s pregnant. She let it be known that at this time she plans to be a virgin on her wedding night.
“It’s given me the street cred to say that would be impossible, because I’m living my life the way I believe is right and that is to stay pure,” she said.
Boy band the Jonas Brothers all wear purity rings. The young brothers aged 15 to 20 believe the rings will help remind them to stay pure with all of the temptation to play laying in wake for them.
This call to Virgin Power though isn’t a new fad. Back when Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson were giggly teens they both pledged to be pure as the driven snow on their wedding day. It appears one may have come close on that vow, one not so much.
Now the public may want this new crop not just to talk the talk but walk the walk.
Being a virgin helps a young star’s bank account. Parents would rather their kids were looking up to a ‘nice girl’ or ‘good boy’ role model than a trashy sex idol. The better reputation a young star has the more likely parents will shell out more money on their products.
“[Stars who pledge their virginity] help win over parents who see their kids getting bombarded with sexual imagery and lyrics,” Barolomeo said. “Virginity certainly helps them get a bigger following.”
PR guru Lizzie Grubman says that pure and innocent has always been the best brand in Hollywood. Young stars that proclaim their purity in public helps their PR machine also.
“Whenever you have a star who is under 18 you usually sell their virtue — Britney did this, the Olsen twins did this and so did Hillary Duff,” said S. Tia Brown, senior editor for InTouch Weekly. “It’s to help sell their brand — parents are making the decision about what’s being purchased and want to see it’s a young girl or guy that can be a role model for their children.”
The young may tell their adoring fans that they are virgins but is that just for hype? America does not want their teen image to reflect ’slutty’ or ‘rebel’ behaviours. Paparazzi may pray for the chance to capture the naughtiness of a young star but if that does happen the public often falls out of favor with that month’s flavor.
The fact is that those saying that they are virgins could be what some would consider sexually active. To some any sexual act is sex while others believe sex is only sexual intercourse.
“We all have different definitions about what sex is and what abstinence means,” said New York-based sex expert Logan Levkoff. “Is sex just about vaginal intercourse, or does it include oral or anal sex?”
“The fact is that teenagers are finding ways to get around the idea of virginity, because for them it means only vaginal intercourse,” Levkoff said.
Perhaps it’s that teen image though that has helped Britney Spears survive a media career even with the massive amount of negative press her actions has garnered. Her good girl cover helped promote her star power.
Still not even Britney was able to live up to the virginity pledges that she has promised her fans in America. But can anyone blame her? Promises that one makes as a young teen can’t always be the ones that people expect to make it through to young or middle adulthood. Not everyone will be a virgin on their wedding bed.
So is it all a hype game? Do these younger stars in Hollywood honestly believe that they will remain pure? Whatever the answer their PR people are loving it.
