Florida Man Dead After Killer Bee Attack

A man in rural northwestern Okeechobee County, Florida has died as a result of a fatal reaction to bee stings. He was stung over 100 times by what officials believe were Africanized honey bees.

So called killer bees are more aggressive than the common honey bee. While their sting has no more potency than ordinary bee stings the danger comes because they attack in swarms. Experts say that they have been in Florida since 2002. There have been a few reports of attacks since that time.

The man was attacked by the bees on April 9 as he tried to dismantle a trailer. The man was aware of a nest of bees on the said trailer.

After the attack state officials destroyed the nest.

While ‘killer bees’ do not seek out people to attack they will act aggressively is they are disturbed such as someone poking their nest.

People should stay away from bee nests and call a professional to remove them. If possible when being chased by a swarm of bees people should run until they can get inside.

Wasp and hornet sprays should not be used on bee nests. Some of the bees will die but the spray can also release a pheromone that will cause a colony to attack.
