At least 19 young girls were killed in a school fire in Uganda overnight. The initial investigation says the evidence is pointing the fire is homicide.

The doors to the dormitory for Buddo Primary School were locked from the outside. It’s possible that there were up to 70 students in the room that was on fire. At least two adults were also reported to have died in the fire.

The identity of the students has been difficult because there are sometimes only peices of bodies being found.

The fire was started at 10:00 p.m. at the school near Kampala. The school is one of the top performing private schools in Uganda.

“Several students who survived the incident have been taken to hospital with minor injuries but we are yet to know how many were in the dormitory at the time of the fire,” police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba told the BBC News website.

Recently the school’s staff has been on strike over unpaid salaries.
