Hillier is expected to work until July 1, 2008. Hillier has been in the position for the last three years. The 52 year old has been the most visible Canadian military leader in decades. He often has made blunt statements on his assessments of Canada’s enemies and defense policy.
“I admit I am no politician. And I don’t think I’m very wise. But I represent the 87,000 Forces members and their families.” - Nov. 6, 2007.
The current government has considered the military man both a blessing and a curse. He has been very vocal about the need of the mission in Kandahar. Both Harper and predecessor Paul Martin have relied on Hillier’s military advice.
The top military job generally lasts for three years. When the third anniversary passed on Feb. 5 rumours started as to when the leader would vacate the position.
“He brought a combination of drive, intelligence and experience … that made him in the end the logical choice,” said former Liberal defence minister Bill Graham.
The top contender to place Hillier are Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie and Lt.-Gen. Walter Natynczyk.
Hillier will leave behind a stronger Canadian military. He made getting new aircraft, vehicles and other equipment a priority.
He has been a part of the military for 36 years when he joined the army. He has always stated that he just wants to be a soldier.
And that he is.
