U.S. Citizens Get Ready For A Little Extra Green
Last month the Treasury Department had said that the first checks would be sent out on May 2. 800,000 lucky tax payers now will see the government rebate on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. While there will be no rebates sent on Thursday Friday will be a massive payout day with 5 million checks in the mail.
Andrew DeSouza, a Treasury spokesman said the checks will be leaving early because of a new computer program that updates records daily. The older program only did weekly updates.
By July 130 million taxpayers should have received their rebate check. The federal government is hoping that the more than $110 billion that is being sent will stimulate the economy. These checks are meant for spending rather than putting into a family’s savings account.
People who filed their 2007 tax return will be given the rebate. Those who opted for direct deposit with the IRS will see the rebates before those who depend on snail mail.
The average taxpayer will get a rebate of $600 if they made under $75,000 with couples getting back $1,200. Each child in a family will receive $300. Those tax payers who do not owe tax but made at least $3,000 in income will be getting a $300 rebate.
The paper checks will be mailed on May 9. The order of the mailings depend on the last two digits of Social Security numbers.
