Florida Teacher Facing Child Abuse Charges After Child Punched

A 8-year-old student from Fort Lauderdale, Florida is recovering after his teacher allegedly punched him in the eye. The child has a bruised eye after being hit with a loosely closed fist.

Art teacher David. A Grant, 36, allegedly punched the youngster at Sunland Elementary School on November 5. The details about why the assault took place are not clear.

Grant turned himself in after being contacted by detectives. He has been charged with child abuse. Effects to reach Grant by the Lakeland Ledger went unanswered Tuesday.

He is being held without bail at Broward County jail.

Grant worked at Sunland Park and Thurgood Marshall elementary schools before the incident. Within days of the alleged punching he was reassigned to work away from students.

If Grant is convicted of the crime he could lose his teaching certificate.
